Is It Painful To Have A Dental Crown

Going to the dentist and undergoing dental procedure does not mean that it will always be accompanied with pain. There are times that a dental procedure is painless; and there are times that a little pain will be felt by the patient during the procedure but a local anesthesia can be administered to the patient to numb pain. The anesthesia will be administered by the dentist prior to starting the dental procedure. With dental crown procedure, the local anesthesia is injected before the tooth is prepared for crowning.

Undergoing dental crown procedure is not painful because of the anesthesia that is injected into the area around the target tooth. It is also less painful than having fake teeth installed. The patient may feel a little unusual around the anesthetized area while a small portion of the tooth’s surface is being removed. This is done before placing the permanent dental crown on the tooth. There are cases where the patient may feel pain on the gum tissue surrounding the crowned tooth or teeth. It can be experienced a few days after the dental procedure. This can also be due to the end of the crown irritating the gum tissue.

Pain may be felt after the procedure especially if there is a problem with the crown that is only discovered recently. Nonetheless, the issues can also be due to the crown being fitted too high or too low than the rest of the natural teeth. However, the pain that is felt by the patient can be fixed by the dentist. The root cause of the pain is the one to be treated such as adjusting the length of the crown so as not to cause any problem when biting or chewing food. Other causes of can be due to a decayed adjacent tooth to the crown since there are times when a neighboring infected tooth can be aggravated by another dental procedure.

Thinking about the pain of having dental crown is really not necessary since these problems can only arise if there are other underlying issues prior to the dental procedure. Sometimes dentists are not able to notice other teeth problems right away. Keep in mind that the discomfort or pain can only be felt without administering anesthesia; but since dentists as a protocol inject anesthesia, the patient will not feel any pain during the entire procedure. Should there be discomfort or pain felt a few days or weeks after the dental procedure, the patient needs to visit the dentist right away to see if the crown is the main cause of the problem or if there are underlying problems.
